Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Interestijng. Up the road from me they went to Thursday Modern to accomodate Friday Pioneer. Considering they have commander etc., and even Legacy on a Friday, that is saying something. Personally I am Ok with modern horizons in Modern. I have more of an issue with it in Legacy, where its impact was...

Re: State of Legacy Thread

Yeah, I had to take apart mono w initiative, and reconfigure mono w stax prison t run without WPA. No biggie though, the mono W initative goes back to being eldrazi for the time being. It was only a loan deck, and I can still loan out a lot of top decks. Shame there is no obvious mono w deck without...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Wotc don't really want Modern to die. It means they can keep making by printing modern sets that avoid standard. They don't want to ban expensive cards like Ragavan though. Modern's big issue is that it is expensive but vulnerable to reprints and bans. Its identity is all over the place and has been...

Re: State of Legacy Thread

EI needed to go. Card advantage is not what delver should be getting by just doing its thing.
WPA- I would have prefered errata, making the mechanic respond to lifeloss and not combat linked, but am ok with it. I though the meta was adapting.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Historically they do NOT ban MH or premium price cards unless they absolutely have to. I can easily see EI copping a ban. I can see aid being hit, if they wanted to shake things up as part of a 'hurt everything' strategy but as for elementals, they present the same issue as RB in Pioneer. Good cards...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

II don't have an issue with elementals per se, T1 Fury and Solitude are not a problem, it is Grief t1 blinked is an issue, blinking in general is an issue. More protection things in general would make removal elementals less of an issue. If there were more pro white, Solitude becomes less of an issue...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Well people moaned for years about things being not interactive, now they moan about the elementals, that by and large interact with their opponent's stuff and are everywhere. We used to have permanents that some decks can't hit, now because people "want to play" it doesn't matter a rat's ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I guess flickering stuff is popular in Edh, so I don't expect movement. Part of the reason white has been so screwed historically is 'can't be cast' (as opposed to taxes), humility effects and mass land destruction have been frowned upon by the edh community, whilst 'interaction' means more 'hide be...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

No worries with Triomes, but evoke and blink is annoying in a world where there is very little counter play to it. Countering, and killing in response, which need mana open, and torpor orb effects which are not main deckable. The format could really do with a Humilty......

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Free 5 cmc creature. Doesn't cost you a card. Was not surprised that they banned yorion, obviously the wrong ban on a cheap card. EI has not gone in Legacy, where it is beyond ban worthy in a Brainstorm Ponder Murktide Drc world (citing Leyline binding as a reason for no ban was especially obnoxious...

It is expensive, wotc don't want you owning all the vintage cards and just playing vintage.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

No, it isn't, No RL would be a grim format. The RL has some beautiful Legacy cards like Tabernacle that make Legacy tick. Removing them would make the format a pale knock off. Far better for Legacy to enjoy Force of Will and Modern to get Force of Negation, maintaining distinct identities. No RL Leg...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Been thinking about what to do about modern, and I just can't come up with much. The mh2 domination is something we will have to live with. As for fixing the format, I don't see pairs and single bans doing anything. They have made the format more interactive, of course, but in doing so have created ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

They have certainly improved legacy though. Problem is modern does not have good enough land kill to stop 4c elemental decks being too good. Free stuff is an issue and always will be, but it is also a safety valve. The elementals are not an issue for me. If any deck finds a way of abusing lots of th...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Pioneer gets support now for one reason. Wotc have explicitly made it a thing in terms of organised play. I actually quite like the format, but it is hugely aggro or tempo and 'control' is two blue counter/removal decks, with one combo deck. Modern has the same block horizons issue as Legacy. Where ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

No, it won't be.
They want to keep printing new artifacts that push the envelope, and that does not tally with Mox Opal.
More simply, the fastest mana they want in the format is one mana t1, into 3 max mana t2, if your opponent does not do something.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I just played Gruul Midrange today actually with carlosalmeida's list. Started out 2-0 but then bombed out, losing to amulet titan and hammer time. All the games were very lopsided, I didn't like it. Either blood moon would blow out stuff like urza's saga or you didn't draw blood moon and lose. Wre...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

B gate is super underpoweredin terms of 1 v 1 play, as they should be, asides from the obligatory accidentally broken in Legacy UR delver monster, there is nothing that will see play there.

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

It was clearly a valid modern target. I think with new focus on the format they took the opportunity to make sure the format is not all about companions come the pro tour, playing it safe in case it turns out the top decks are all Lurrus, which once the pros get hold of may have been the case. It is...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

There may not be more than the odd one. They need Pioneer to work. The plan of killing Legacy and making Modern be the new legacy and Pioneer the new Modern failed, because the Legacy format had sunk to community supported levels only. It is hard to kill a community format, especially a decent one. ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Personally I have not had much opportunity to play Modern in 22. Legacy 4 events, draft 2, Pioneer 1, sealed 1, canlander 1. The only modern fnm clashed with Legacy, and the REL comp Modern clashed with rugby. Covid and the like has limited opportunities. I have been working on enchantress- I play t...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

If Yorion becomes an issue it can probably be more easily dealt with than Lurrus. In Legacy Yorion has become the dominant d n T deck, and slips in at the fringes of the fringe elsewhere, money pile dual land based Legacy decks have not adopted it as they are too busy fighting on other axis to be ab...

Re: State of Legacy Thread

That is true, but I would still stay that my point stands- Modern is just not 5x cheaper than Legacy, and financially would say it is better to buy into Legacy despite RL prices.
