Re: Goblin Charbelcher
I've drafted a SB plan against the commonly-played decks in the format. In doing so I've had more thought over some of the maindeck and SB choices. First is Star in the flex slots. I like having both Star and Cantor as fixers, cutting one or the other depending on the matchup. Cantor is better for s...

Re: Goblin Charbelcher
Chancellor is no longer needed. The reason it was in old lists is that Belcher demands low land count, so they had to substitute lands with Chancellor + 1-mana land searchers. This was inefficient since Chancellor + searcher is equivalent to 1 land, but takes 2 cards, so you're basically starting lo...

Re: Goblin Charbelcher
I saw a reddit post and built my list off it: Lands 4 Shatterskull Smashing // Shatterskull, the Hammer Pass 4 Turntimber Symbiosis // Turntimber, Serpentine Wood 4 Spikefield Hazard // Spikefield Cave 4 Valakut Awakening // Valakut Stoneforge 4 Bala Ged Recovery // Bala Ged Sanctuary Wincons 4 Gobl...

Re: [Official] IKO Previews in Modern
I have a soft spot for Aristocrats, so I'm liking Garrison Cat and Serrated Scorpion. Lurrus is also a great fit for the deck. Light of Hope has a use in some Bolas's Citadel decks - it either gains a net 3 life to keep you going, or blows up Eidolon of the Great Revel . The main use I see for the t...

Re: [Official] IKO Previews in Modern
Lurrus has a strong effect, but your deck needs to want that effect. Stuff like Burn can play him, but what does bringing back a Monastery Swiftspear on turn 4 do? Something like Vizier combo would be a better fit. It seems a lot better in Legacy/Vintage since they have Lotuses, whereas our Lotus ca...

Re: [Official] IKO Previews in Modern
Seems like you'd want Ice-Fang Coatl if you're in the market for fliers that cantrip. They each have their strengths and weaknesses, I think Coatl is better because it comes out earlier. I would also be wary of playing an expensive beatstick that dies to Fatal Push (even it if draws a card, comparin...

Re: [Official] IKO Previews in Modern
I don't think Bogles wants mutate unless it's super pushed. It has a few pieces that rely on cards having the enchantment/aura type (Ethereal Armor, Daybreak Coronet, Kor Spiritdancer). A creature that acts like an aura is nonetheless still a creature and detracts from the deck's other synergies. Lu...

I'd like Punishing Fire to come back. It seems tame compared to recurring Engineered Explosives.

Re: [Official] Theros Beyond Death in Modern
Whole spoiler is out. Underworld Breach feels insane in Emry Jeskai Ascendancy and would be my pick for best card of the set. The addition of Breach + Grinding Station increases the <turn 4 kill rate, not just because it's another fast combo, but also because with Grinding Station, any 0 will work w...

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion
Merfolk Secretkeeper might be good for self-mill decks. It mills you first and then provides a body for Vengevine later. If you want to go deep you can use it to conspire Memory Sluice too. It mills more than Stitcher's Supplier at first (but less once Supplier dies), and you have to pay 2 mana to g...

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion
Putting a Castle in a 2-color deck does have a significant opportunity cost. That cost is being able to find the right colors for your spells, when each Castle only taps for 1 color. Colonnade's cost is lower than a Castle's because it taps for 2 colors, along with most other manlands. Martyr Proc h...

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion
UW supports its 2 Glacial Fortress with 2 shocks, 5 fetches and 8 basics. So I'd be looking at 15 basics in a mono-colored deck for 2 Castles, maybe be a bit generous and lower that to 13. Note that this only matters if ETBing tapped is a big deal - in Amulet for example they have an artifact that r...

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion
The green Castle provides as much mana as Eldrazi Temple for Giants . Amulet could want it, Titanshift not so much because 1) Valakut limits the number of non-mountain lands they can have in the deck and 2) Valakut places emphasis on "number of lands you have" and not "total amount of...

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion
Fires of Invention feels like a bad version of Wilderness Reclamation. Pay 4 mana for an enchantment to double your mana, except one plays well with instants and the other locks you out of casting spells on your opponent's turn.

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion
Irencrag Feat is to rituals what Day's Undoing is to wheels: throw on an additional clause to make it unusable in storm decks. 7 mana is exactly what you need to cast & activate Goblin Charbelcher , but a good number of wins also come from Empty the Warrens (if you have 4 mana to cast Feat, you ...

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion
Don't think Wildborn Preserver will see any play, Scavenging Ooze is a better mana sink bear. Charming Prince seems like a card that flicker decks would like, since it can be flickered for value while also flickering other creatures. I'm thinking of decks like Astral Drift or Oketra's Monument . Scr...

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion
Once Upon a Time is amazing. Feels almost like a Leyline. Mana dork decks have the problem of T1 mana dork being their best play, but they never want to draw mana dorks late game; Once Upon a Time solves that by letting you cut dorks for it so you still have good odds for the T1 dork, but in the lat...

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion
We have Beast Whisperer as the Glimpse of Nature on a body. It used to be played in Elves as an experiment, but they moved back to the traditional Lead the Stampede / Chord of Calling . One thing Chulane does that BW doesn't is have an inbuilt mana engine - with Elves you need Heritage Druid so your...

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion
That color combination on Oko though :\ Beast Within is a SBable card, but the decks that play it are prepared for the 3/3 - Living End wipes it with its namesake and Titanshift can either Anger it, wall it with Obstinate Baloth , or shoot it with a Valakut trigger. It's also worth pointing out that...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)
There was an article on how UR Phoenix is not actually a Phoenix deck but a Thing in the Ice deck. We've seen Thing decks T8 GPs before - Jeskai Thing/ Pyromancer Ascension and UR Kiln Fiend . Admittedly those decks had Probe in them, but I don't think this is the last we'll see of Thing in the Ice....

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)
Wow oh wow. Hogaak gone, Looting also gone, SFM back. At least now we have our version of Leovold, Emissary of Trest , a card banned in a format it was created for. Looting kills a whole bunch of decks. I'm quite sad to see Loam get hit by it as well, given all the support for it in Modern Horizons....

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 05/20/2019)
Aaaaand here's another announcement where SFM stays banned. But seriously, with all that UW has gotten in WAR, does it deserve that much more? This ban was a lot more palatable than GGT's. "Bridge from Below doesn't cost mana or other resources to use and isn't reliant on being drawn naturally ...
