Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

the difference between Jace and Twin is.. Jace TMS was banned from the beginning, and then unbanned. Twin was legal for a long time and then banned. So far, I don't know of any modern card that was legal for a long time.. banned.. and then unbanned. Depends on what you qualify as a "long time....

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

In my opinion, this "threats vs answers: threats should be better/have to be better" is a gross over-simplification of the matter. Some removal spells are "better" than some creatures, i.e. they trade up with them in value/tempo (e.g. Push with revolt, Kommand with artifacts etc...

Re: [Deck] Grixis Death's Shadow

The mirror tends to be about raw card advantage and discard spells are notoriously poor topdecks. I usually take out most discard spells and put in anything that can give me any incremental value. It's served me pretty well.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I think Emry has all of the makings of a card that has the potential to be busted in Modern. • Cost reducer? Check. • Card selection enabler? Check. • Puts cards in graveyard? Check. • Interacts with graveyard? Check. • Part of a game-winning combo? Check. Does that mean she WILL be busted? Nah. She...

Re: [Deck] Izzet Phoenix

Izzet Charm can pull a lot of weight... but the deck loses its explosive plays. I think there's still something here, but a large portion of the power can from doing some insane sequences on turn 3 that usually needed to include some number of Faithless Looting, pitching some Phoenixes.

Just Hogaak. Let's get him outta here, then figure out where the chips fall before we make any more moves.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

The problem is that play experience often tends to be skewed and biased, unless it's backed up by numbers. Plenty of pros and grinders are notorious for making some bold, sweeping statements, without anything to back it up aside from " I played it a bunch of times and it's busted." I know ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

is Hogaak the only thing to talk about? Yes, honestly. Hogaak has warped the meta so much there isn't really much else to talk about. Step 1, 2 and 3 of designing your deck atm should be "how do I beat Hogaak?" before considering anything else in the meta. I see no reason for the deck not...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

@ cfusionpm Sometimes I suspect that you perceive a lack of outrage is equivalent to ignorance. Most of us have qualms with the format and I think most people here would agree that banning Hogaak isn't going to solve all of the problems of the format. Modern is more linear than most of us would like...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

100% its an open question. I personally feel a ban on Looting will competitively kill UR Phoenix, will slow Hogaak/Dredge/Mono R Phoenix and probably kill Mardu Pyro/Hollow One. A Stirrings ban, will competitively hurt Scales, and G-Tron but kill? I'm not sure. You are right though, we cannot predi...

Re: [Deck] Izzet Phoenix

How have you guys been faring against Jund? I recently talked to a Jund player about the matchup and he seemed to think that UR Phoenix is favored in game 1, which I don't really agree with. Short of an explosive opener, a pile of removal and discard seems really good against us. Thing in the Ice fe...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Manamorphose X 3, Faithless Looting, flip Thing in the Ice to Awoken Horror, bounce creatures, attack for 7 is just not going to fit the bill of being interactive for most Modern players. Whether it's an amazing play or not is more debatable... This is interesting. Using 4 cards to sweep a board an...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

The biggest problem with the term "interactive" is that it's really a sliding scale. Everyone seems to draw their own line to determine what makes a deck an interactive deck vs non-interactive. Some decks are easy to categorize. Jund is obviously interactive, since a majority of the deck i...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Are we seriously rehashing Twin yet again? Maybe we DON'T have all of the data that Wizards has, but with the data that we DO have, it seems to suggest that Twin was hindering blue diversity. Or, at the very least, removing Twin from the format did not add blue diversity to the format. Ktkenshinx ha...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

2 Modal (or Surgical/SCooze) in the main, and Modal in the side is acceptable to me. Pure dedicated hate for the yard (Traps, Voids) should not be 'normal'. For the forseeable future, I'll be on 2 Surgical/3 Trap, simply because they are free. The concerning thing about grave hate is that it has be...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Everyone just needs to chill. People are way too emotionally charged on the ban issues. Both sides have pretty reasonable points of view when you remove some of the incendiary remarks. Those who have promoted being patient and giving the format a minute to breathe have been met with just as much vit...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Everyone in general should be more reasonable with their ban-talk. I'm sort of sick of everyone jumping onto the "it needs to be banned" bandwagon. If WotC listened to the uproar that happens everytime a new deck puts up impressive results, Death's Shadow would be banned (which is doing ve...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

The "it was fine until X card got printed" argument just doesn't make sense to me. Eye of Ugin was in the format for a long time without causing problems. Krark Clan Ironworks was fine for a long time in the format. When you apply that argument to those cards, it just doesn't work. Being i...
