Re: [Deck] Mono G Devotion / Nykthos Green

Hey all! I will be updating the primer here shortly with updated lists. I'm not gonna go too far back in time (as some of us have been playing devotion for 5+ years) but will show an arbor elf variety, leyline variety, and a T&N deck just so the "big three" engines are provided. The re...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

People saying that Astrolabe will never be banned because it is not obvious enough forget that Probe got the axe. Probe is a better comparison to Astrolabe than DRS I believe. Probe was in too many decks, serving too many purposes, and allowing existing strategies to play over their opponent's hate...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Better than nothing. Astrolabe: I understand people on both sides of the debate. The thing is, astrolabe doesn't help struggling decks, like control, play a larger diversity of card. It helps *any* deck do that. Is astrolable okay when it helps weak deck but bad when it's an already tier-1 deck bei...

Re: [Deck] Izzet Delver

The deck has undergone some changes recently trying to become a little more aggressive in game one. I cut the spell snare and one remand and added a soul-scar mage and land. I also cut the echoing truth for additional burn. I have also been testing a one of wizards lightning in place of chandra. Whe...

[mention]gkourou[/mention] - I'm glad you found a new deck that you love. MTGGoldfish also played that deck tonight and it looked awesome. I have watched different modern streams all day long and I have seen a ton of positivity and excitement. It really couldn't have gone much better on day one of t...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Reid Duke had a long modern stream today with Jund and I really hope that his stream is an indication of the bans impact on modern. He played two leagues with a total of 10 matchups and played 10 different decks (affinity, storm, UW control, infect, valakut, GDS, Amulet Titan, and to be honest I for...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

It looks like early indications (from MTGO streams of Eli Kassis and Sam Black's discord) is that the Urza deck has been changed over to Temur with mystic sanctuary , archmage's charm , Wrenn and Six , Emry, Lurker of the Loch , and Mox Amber , It remains to be seen if this is the core of the Urza d...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I agree [mention]cfusionpm[/mention] . The bans were great, but I still think Veil needed to go and I would have liked to see an unban. I do have a feeling that they possibly wanted to "patch things up" during this announcement and then save an unban or two for a later date if needed. I st...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

This Oko-Urza-Titan slugfest is soooo annoying to watch. At least we get to see a Yawgmoth or Bant Snow Control/Snowblade from time to time. The GP coverage was much better in terms of games and decks. I have found that the SCG meta in general always seems to be much more inbred than GP metas. They...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I think there are several factors at play with the GP attendance. 1.) Modern is on a decline and in a bad spot. The meta game is not great right now with Oko everyhere. I don't think it's comparable to eldrazi winter or Hogaak days, but there are definitely some major changes needed. 2.) Pioneer is ...

Wow. That was a fast turnaround on the announcement. They had to know it was a bad idea. Maybe they thought, "let's throw it out there and maybe no one will see it" or "maybe it won't go over that bad". [mention]Aazadan[/mention] - I agree with you. That's why I said in my origin...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

[mention]idSurge[/mention] - I should have went back and looked at who made the argument originally, but I am too lazy ;). I edited my post. I tend to agree that the london mulligan rule disproportionately helps the combo decks that don't interact. It does help the control and midrange decks, but no...

On the London Mulligan argument- Many of you have actually changed my mind a bit. That happens sometimes when we have civil and logical discussions I guess :). I originally thought that the London rule definitely was very bad for constructed magic (especially non-rotating or powerful formats) and it...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

It sounds a lot like the kinds of arguments people made against unbanning Jace, Stoneforge, and even Ancestral Vision. I really don't feel like deep diving into this one again, other than to say that the unfounded fears generated by this deck have grown to unparalleled legendary proportions. The ma...

would what we gain from unbanning twin outweigh the possible problems involved with unbanning twin? What problems? The most obvious problem would be a possible re-ban in the future if it regains a 15%+ meta game share and starts to win most tournaments again. Basically, if the deck causes similar i...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I really hope we see a strong mission statement about modern's future in combination with multiple bans to give modern a shot in the arm. Hopefully some combination of Oko, veil, mox opal, astrolabe, and simian spirit guide). I think any less than 3 bans would not be enough to show they are truly in...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

The format is on fire right now. Wizards needs to take multiple aggressive bans to save it, likely an unban, and then release a statement about Modern's direction going forward. There is no other option that is going to reverse the format's trajectory. As someone who has tirelessly advocated for cr...
