Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Here's my issue with Blazing Shoal: Let's say it was unbanned tomorrow. Awesome, but who's running it? It's a 2-card battle trick if being used for "fair" purposes, far too costly for anyone to build around. It's essentially destined to be used for a combo kill. So should it stay banned be...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I always argue that it's less "We decided that after looking into Modern that Unbans are not necessary" and more "We're too busy putting out fires in other formats to even look at a format that's relatively healthy". We should just sit back and laugh at the fact that Standard jus...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Is there an announcement stating that the changes will specifically affect Modern? Only asking because I haven't found anything concrete after doing my own research. And honestly, if something has to be banned, I'd probably only ban Lurrus, and I wouldn't touch any unbans until we know what the form...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Are companions even being used in any noteworthy tournaments? (as in major events hosted by Wizards with a lot of attention/media) Are there even any noteworthy tournaments on the horizon? Do companions affect Wizards' income in a negative way too? Because money would be the first, and probably onl...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

If something had to be banned, I'd rather they just ban Lurrus and Yorion. They're far more present than any other companion, and they arguably have some of the least restrictive conditions to fulfill. If other companions were to rise up in the wake of their banning and take their place, I would be ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I do love the effort into the art of basic lands recently. I will probably try to obtain 6-10 of the upcoming full art lands because the art is so beautiful. If there's any one flaw, it's that they just...don't feel like MtG lands. They almost seem to exist in a vacuum. The latest Innistrad alt arts...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Ok, your stance is definitely a lot clearer now. I don't agree that stax/prison pieces deserve the same protection that counter-proof creatures have or counter-proof spells have precisely because they directly influence the game for multiple turns and often come in the form of non-creature artifacts...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I'm actually really confused by this post. If I'm understanding this right, you think that prison pieces are too weak, but spot removal is too strong, and the solution is to have threats that can't be answered in a format almost historically dominated by decks that were too hard to answer before bei...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Brian Kibler basically sealed Second Sunrise when he wrote F6 on a piece of paper in a live tournament on camera, got a hot dog, talked with some friends and came back to find his eggs opponent still playing out his turn. It's not even about it being good. The decks using it are too good at screwing...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I haven't looked at the gauntlet decks in detail, but I have to assume that WotC just found a deck list from when each deck was banned, slightly tweaked it, and used that for the gauntlet. If you think about it, taking an older deck prior to banning cards and updating it to accommodating it to deal ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I'm gearing up to get back into competitive play, so I can't comment on ban potential based on personal experience, though challenges seem to indicate that nothing is consistently dominant, so I'm inclined to avoid shaking the boat. I can understand if someone disagrees with this, and I lack the rec...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

This werewolf set is looking extremely weak when it comes to cards that would be good in modern. But what cards would modern like to see right now anyway? Honestly, a good Standard set has maybe a handful of cards that either slightly improve weaker Modern decks or provide interesting cards that ca...

Re: First Copyrighted Magic Deck

This seems like a real stretch made by a man who doesn't actually care about successfully filing the claim, but about making a point. From what I can tell from a quick Google search, you can't make just list out ingredients for a recipe and copyright it. At minimum, you need a collection of recipes ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I mean, any card in a growing card pool can be fine until it isn't. GGT was fine until Shadows Over Innistrad. Mox Opal was fine until Urza. Mycosynth Lattice was fine until Karn, the Great Creator. The list goes one because cards don't exist in a vacuum, not even banned ones. It always takes a deck...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

True, I misread your post. But I still don't give them any credit for it. They're still not following any kind of consistent data-driven regiment when it comes to bans, and all meaningful data is purposely hidden from us. I think the issue is that the most meaningful data can't be given to us. At t...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Would anyone be against WotC announcing a "No Change, we see Phoenix and Jeskai control are still hugely popular but their internal win data percentages do not support their popularity"? Basically just telling the player base "hey, these are very beatable, you guys need to try harder...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

On the subject of golden monkeys, what seems weirdest to me as far as finance goes is that the EV of an MH2 set booster box is still roughly $430 dollars. Forgive me if this is more of a finance thread question, but when the EV is that much higher than the retail price, shouldn't the prices of singl...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The Probe comparison is pretty strong. No one positive trait of Bauble is overbearing, but each trait has become extremely relevant over that past two years. Hard to say if it's become stronger than Probe per se, but it's certainly following in its footsteps. If DRC decks, Lurrus decks and Kitchen d...

Re: Would you accept kingmaking to win?

I wont offer anyone anything but if I can't win I'll go out swinging and this will put someone in better situation. Something that has happened a bunch is when I'm over targeted by someone and while I'm going out I commit all my resources to screw with that persons game. Never though much of it, do...

Re: Would you accept kingmaking to win?

TBH, I really never receive these offers, which is probably a result of being caught between a pseudo-competitive EDH group of friends and a second group that's way less competitive. That and my friends Kaalia and Meren apparently don't make good friends. Who knew? :p That being said, I have often b...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I doubt it. Since MH2 was released, Lurrus's presence has dropped significantly. Just looking at Goldfish's meta breakdown, the only decks using it at the moment are Death's Shadow decks, which are slowly being replaced with UR decks using Murktide Regent. It should be a pretty safe purchase

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Crazy part is that Ragavan still costs more in digital than in paper. I'm withholding judgment until I finish up my post MH2 Modern decks and finally get some paper in and until I see more Challenges clearly dominated by monkey business, but either the hype (and price) is real and I should just play...

Vancouver? Paris, London I know- what is the Vancouver mull? Vancouver Mulligan was when you would draw one less for every time you mulled, but after you finished taking mulligans you could scry 1. It replaced the Paris mulligan in 2015 and was itself replaced by the London Mull when Core Set 2020 ...

According to MTGGoldfish's price trackers, as of this post the estimated value of a set booster box is more than 2 times the average price of a box, which means just about every rare and mythic will see a drop in price.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Splinter Twin unban coming soon I guess. It is added to the list of bonus cards in MH2. Doesn't make sense to me to include it otherwise since it is a Modern focuses set. I don't like it but lets wait and see what happens. This is the only post I will dedicate to Splinter Twin. If you're talking ab...
