Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

tl;dr For those who are asking for bans, are you asking for them because a deck(s) are truly broken, or is it because the meta in your opinion does not appear to be evolving quickly enough to avoid stagnation? If the latter, about how long should a meta remain the same (i.e. T1 decks barely change ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Im just really tired of companions. The 3 mana tax did not do enough to stop them from being overly dominant. Lurrus is the one I think should REALLY go but honestly I'd just prefer to see the mechanic get undone entirely Otherwise I think modern is great, Ragavan and Saga are powerful but ok in my ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

It seems Endurance was underestimated by a lot of people. I still don't get why it sees so much play. What makes Endurance so good? Is it always worth running in a green deck? Endurance has a lot of text on it that secretly bumps it powerlevel. Of course it being powerful gravehate is obvious, but ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Honestly excited to see people on reddit discuss whether the utterly unplayable Teferi could fit in Modern. I'm good on metagame defining sets for quite a bit

Also, we got Faithless Looting back, but now it costs twice as much and is an instant. I'm curious to see whether that will do anything

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I really dislike crossovers, it cheapens the experience for both involved brands for me. I'm no longer enjoying a fictional world, I'm being shaken down for every penny I have because obviously I'm stupid enough to clap when I recognise the thing. I thought the Godzilla cards were ugly, and was hone...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Consider is categorically better than Opt in nearly every possible application. Unless you are specifically looking for toolbox tutor targets (in which case, why are you playing Cantrips in the first place??), putting a card in your yard is better than the bottom of your library in almost every sce...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I recall around the release of MH1 someone asking me what we would need for Modern zombies to become viable and I literally suggested champion of the parish for zombies Consider is a pretty significant bump from Opt, especially if it comes with some more viable flashback cards. For DRC decks it bein...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Urza's Saga, Ragavan and Lurrus all get played in fair decks. The least fair is probably hammertime, which even then is a creature combo deck that rewards playing spot removal; generally a sign of a healthy format. After MH1 warped modern for a year and caused several bans I was somewhat worried abo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

People were first focused on the Urza's Saga decks, skipping gravehate for artifact/land hate. Now, it's slowly becoming clear that UR Murktide will be a top tier deck in Modern, and with that I expect gravehate to ramp up a bit again. Artifact hate is much less effective vs Saga than you'd think. ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Jeff Hoogland had the hot take that Mishra's Bauble is currently better in Modern than Gitaxian Probe would be due to Bauble's interaction with DRC, Lurrus and Emry.

Whilst I do think Probe would still be stronger than Bauble because of the immediate draw, it really is pretty close.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

This is the first time I've actually been priced out of playing the deck I want. I got my fetches cheap back in the day, I got my JtMS before he got unbanned... but Ragavan is now 65 a pop on cardmarket and I just refuse to put down that much money for it. What a frustrating feeling.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Looking at how Urza's Saga is slowly seeping into every deck - if it ends up needing a nerf, I kind of hope it would be Mishra's Bauble that gets the hammer and not Urza's Saga. It isn;t the first time Bauble has been on the radar, and it just does so much for a free spell.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Funnily enough, so far it seems that whilst everyone was going nuts over the evoke creatures, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer was actually stealing the show, What a flavour win. There also appears to be another Hogaak-esque graveyard deck featuring Feasting Troll King , although the jury is out on how bust...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The deck design space of Grief/Ephemerate goes further than just having to be heavily BW. As @cfusionpm said, you are probably playing some kind of interactive midrange deck. You need plenty of Ephemerate targets, and the 3/2 Menace body of Grief has to actually be relevant, i.e. you should be play...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Modern horizons 2 has been absurd so far. I expected them to tone it down from MH1, but they might've actually turned it up further.

I have no clue what modern will look like after this

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

One of my favourite tidbits about Modern Magic is back in the day when Frank Karsten consistently refused to have an out to Stony Silence in his affinity sideboard. His reasoning was that, not only do they have to draw it, they have to draw it at a moment where they aren't already miles behind affin...

And in one fell swoop, Tron decks (and artifact decks) were killed. Void Mirror . I guess it was a good thing I never did commit to buying the last couple of expensive cards I needed. This was exactly the kind of card I was hoping not to see. Don't want to sound like a pessimist, but if this kills ...

Re: [ELD] Throne of Eldraine Modern Discussion

This is a fun thread to read through after the fact. OuaT immediately got spotted as being really powerful, but everyone is pretty meek on Oko.

Also I said Venser, Shaper Savant is better than Brazen Borrower, what the hell (although to be fair I really like Venser)

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Jitte would make SFM less mediocre at least. Jitte definitely was on my "never ever" list for a while but I'm coming back on that. My one gripe now would be that it doesn't really make for such good gameplay with creature vs creature decks, but then again, what creature decks? I would real...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I don't like how vague WotC is being about the Universes Beyond cards being legal in Modern. So far I would assume no, but a WotC rep on reddit refused to either confirm or deny it (maintaining corpspeak with "not standard legal is all we're saying"). I expect a huge divide in the communit...
