Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I love the name and artwork for Sheoldred, the Apocalypse ; it's imposing and grand, much like Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite . The mana cost and abilities are a bit of a let down though. The 'Apocalypse' is opponents losing nibbles of life when they draw cards? That enormous centipedal body is only a 4...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

Neither would Maro; he'd mean "five mana-value creature" rather than "five mana value-creature".

Regardless, it'll probably be something relatively Stompy and not concerning.

Re: Tymna and Kamahl: Hate Hate Hate

I'll second Gaddock Teeg . He shuts down a lot of the higher CMC interaction that becomes more common as you move away from cEDH, providing a measure of protection to your board. Speaking of protection, running either Shalai, Voice of Plenty or Saryth, the Viper's Fang can shut down a lot of spot re...

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

I vastly prefer 5 to 3; a good number of my favourite games were 5-player. In my experience, more players allows for more opportunity to have answers when they are needed and this contributes to games with more of the back-and-forth that I love.

Re: The Community Deck Build Project v2.0

Of these three commanders, I would find Kathril the most interesting to build. I'd lean into a Hatebears-Midrange build; the bears to provide the interaction to stop players going for combo wins and the midrange creatures for the beatdown and to provide keywords to soup up Kathril. While some incide...

Re: The Community Deck Build Project!

You'd pretty much need to start over to make Obosh work; practically half the deck (32 cards) is incompatible with using it as a companion. Not saying you can't do that, but it's a lot of work.

Guardian of Faith. Borrowing the expression from 3drinks in the Community Deck Build Thread, Teferi's Protection is an example of a "boring, egregiously expensive card".

Faeburrow! Was so happy when it came out; a budget replacement for Bloom Tender was sorely needed at the time. BoP is an exorbitant mana dork.

I'll vote yay for Backdraft Hellkite and Tibalt's Trickery (confirming them) and nay to Fast//Furious and Ogre Arsonist (nix'ing them). I'll vote yay for Birgi, although with reservation. I think she leads us down a pseudo-storm route with wheels, rituals and Underworld Breach , which would be an in...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Marisi, Breaker of the Coil

To make the most use of his goad ability, you want to lean into creatures that are pseudo-unblockable (i.e. Shadow and the like), which never excited me. I tried building him as a more generic Naya beatdown deck but didn't find it satisfying. May include him in a Naya hatebears deck I'm brewing thou...

Alternatively, get so fed up with prices that we just start to proxy everything. Which, you know, with kitchen table being as much of a thing as it is, is a real risk if prices just don't ever drop to a reasonable level. This is pretty much where I'm headed, in the longer term. In the short term I'...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - False Prophet

Hawk hit on the reason I no longer run it in Ayli: I specifically want to avoid mass exile so I can recur creatures. I did run False Prophet early on, where clever stacking of triggers can partially get you around this, but it's simpler to just avoid it altogether. Not to mention that repeatable ma...

Re: Is White getting better?

The hard part with white hatebears is that white weenie exists as an archetype in other formats. True, but you can control that. Drip feed some effects through Standard releases and provide others through supplemental sets, so those ones don't impact Standard or Modern. It's alright to have new car...

Re: Is White getting better?

If they're ever going to make mistakes in White's favour, I'd love to see some obscene hatebears get printed with heavily-pipped costs. Like maybe an asymmetric Archon of Valor's Reach for 1WWW and it's a 1/2, or a fixed Hullbreacher that doesn't give you treasures (possibly also symmetric). Leaning...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Wilderness Reclamation

It's no Seedborn Muse, but it does do a big thing the Muse does.l, gets around Winter Orb amd friends. To my understanding, Static Orb and Winter Orb only affect players during their own untap steps, so Seedborn Muse gets around them by minimal tapping on the turn before yours, while still allowing...

Re: Companion Mechanic

Amongst the two groups I play with, I haven't seen a single companion used in maybe 40+ decks. Certainly a lot of those decks predate companions - so the investment needed to adjust the deck to fit a companion would be a hurdle - but it doesn't seem to register when discussing new decks either. Ther...

Re: Your dream mono white or Azorius commander?

When I examine what White and Blue contribute over my roster of decks, I get the following breakdown. White: Removal, recursion and hatebears. Blue: Counterspells, draw and clones. Removal and counterspells are necessary but are not things to build around, unless you're trying to create extroardinar...

Not sure where I'm going with that but I do think there is blame to go around for some things. I think where you're going is "Some people are dicks. More at 11." 😜 Really though, I don't think there's any significant animosity borne towards cEDH that isn't rooted in another issue or is pe...

He's a great piece for Curious Control-style decks, where he's often another Curiosity effect for your Vial Smasher the Fierce triggers and can help amass significant card advantage. Getting incidental advantage when opponents fetch into shock, get hit by others, have Bob out, etc. is just gravy. Hi...

With a card like Gifts or Intuition you had better have shortcuts because the complexity involved in those packages is very high sometimes. There's certainly a lot of complexity in these cards. If you're using it reactively to deal with a threat, then the political play (a la Tasigur ) is there to ...

Re: Commanders with built in methods of avoiding tax

I guess you'd modify Rule 6 to something like, 6. Commanders begin the game in the Command Zone. While a commander is in the command zone, it may be cast, subject to the normal timing restrictions for casting creatures. Its owner must pay 2 for each time it was previously cast from the command zone;...
