Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I'm not usually that guy, but honestly, I'm not optimistic about Monday's announcement. No matter what they do, modern will probably be in a poor place. Before companions turned modern on it's head, there were already massive problems with the format, mainly Uro being in a massive amount of decks an...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Looking at Reddit there (I don't use it) the mind boggles at the head space some people exist in. I won't go into detail, but looking at the world and the stuff that happens in it has taught me that the average person is ignorant at best. This is true in most areas, why should it be different in mt...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

ktkenshinx To expand on the Modern Nexus metagame update: For some reason I don't fully understand, David always defends super-bannable cards. The data always gets "complicated", or "recent trends are muddeling the picture", or absurdly prevalent cards are "falling off"...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I've actually come to the conclusion that the best thing for me to do right now is just run Lurrus myself. Why? 1) I don't play modern at a massive disadvantage every second game and Lurrus games are actually quite enjoyable. I'm in the fortunate position of being able to incorporate Lurrus by chang...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I just came to the realisation (as others have I guess) that if they ban just Lurrus in modern, Yorion decks will absolutely take over modern. Bant Snow was far and away the best deck before companions, and if Lurrus goes, the already best deck just got a massive upgrade. Same is true for Yorion Sca...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Quick observation on Lurrus, nothing new, just another perspective: I've been on Grixis Control for years, it's the only deck I've ever seriously played, apart from UR Thing in the Ice. And when Lurrus arrived, I stopped playing Grixis Control because I thought Lurrus doesn't slot into that well eno...

Ok I just faced a Kaheera Companion Hatebear deck with 4 Lurrus mainboard.

This format is dead as %$#%.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I am not sure what specifics that people are arguing for, but I think Lurrus of the Dream-Den should only be banned as a Companion (at least for Modern). I think it is an incredibly powerful card that is okay to be in Modern as a 4 of in someone's deck (or 1-3; whatever). I think I disagree. Becaus...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

This selling practice sounds extremely %$#% up. It is literally gambling. I'd be careful to not get into any sort of unsanctioned, luck-based trade etc. Sounds like you uncovered the darkest corner of MTG trade. I mean what the hell? I expect the total sum of, say, 5$ slots far exceeds the cards ori...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I can get behind most of your arguments, but I honestly don't think there is a middle ground to be found when discussing Lurrus. There is no middle ground. Lurrus warps the format in an unprecedented, extreme way. Either you're ok with that, in which case you're ok with an extremely warped metagame....

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I think this makes sense if you're just looking at decks in a vacuum, but doesn't make any sense at all when you look at the actual top-tier Lurrus decks. Thankfully, we have that data in an ever-increasing N=474 MTGO dataset. Here are the top-tier Lurrus decks: Burn Jund Prowess Devoted Devastatio...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

The fact the meta is the most diverse since decades ago is not debatable. Companions or not. It is debatable though, if you think about what "diversity" really means. It means a large number of decks doing well that are categorically different from each other. Most "new" Lurrus ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I just had another one of those great experiences. Which point to the huge faults in modern even before Lurrus. It is absolutely vital to not brush those flaws aside, even though obviously, WotC will do exactly that. I face UG Uro. Have him down to nothing, he has no board except astrolabe, an Uro i...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I just had an experience that clarified for me wether Lurrus is "an acceptable" evil if it means getting a somewhat diverse metagame in return. I was on Grixis Control, and I faced the rare mirror. I was'nt on Lurrus, he was. And Grixis mirros usually go like this: endlessly trading small ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

My personal %$#% list now very firmly. includes Lurrus, Uro, Astrolabe and Veil of Summer. Notable %$#% omissions are Mystic Sanctuary (because imo it suffers from the sins of, Uro, Urza and Astrolabe) and T3feri, because as a blue-based control deck I should be hit hard by it but It seldom really b...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

that's not untrue. GGT having dredge 6 instead of Imp's dredge 5 isn't a huge improvement. It's better, but not by a large margin. Also Imp can far more easily come down as a 1/2 deathtouch blocker in a pinch, GGT at cmc5 is extremely hard to cast. Amalgam or even Cathartic Reunion, I´'m kinda fine ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I'd hate it if many companions were printed so every strategy could play one. The repetitiveness would be nauseating. Btw I think Uro is not completely unlike companions in that it makes games extremely stale and repetitive: the first few times, it was kinda fun trying to grind out an active Uro wit...

Let me clarify: you just said a deck having a 30 card change is not a rotation.

I'll remove myself from this argument, it's clearly not worth having.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if it was up to the community (I hate that word), all we'd have left to play with were basic lands and maybe something like a vanilla 2/2 creature. And that %$#% sucks. So tired of all the whining and moaning. Hate on me all you want and disagree as much a...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Sure they are. You haven't lost (many) cards in the format. Certainly not enough to claim they've rotated. The concept of adding new cards, inherently means cards are going to rotate out of favor and you'll see better options over time. Power creep is high, but it's inaccurate to say the format rot...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Let's just ask them then to stop printing cards altogether. Stop the game now, play with the cards we have and be done with it. Since any powerful card is "too powerful, what were they thinking? ban it!" or any other card is "basically unplayable". At this point it just seems mo...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

As a side note, I don't think Lurrus is long for this world. It was played in absurd quantity in the last modern challenge, which it won. I think Lurrus may be an attempt to swing back the pendulum from UG towards black and white, though it's obvious that this has to backfire since Astrolabe you can...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I haven't, weirdly, ever said this on any mtg forum, but I am seriously thinking about quitting Modern, and since that's the only format that interests me, mtg as a whole. The last time modern was great was after the BBE/JtmS unban. But now, it's been a YEAR since everything has gone to hell. There'...
