Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I'm not sure how I feel about Ballista, tbh. It's the easiest combo to break, requiring something as simple as a Shock to totally subvert. Do people feel this deck is too aggressive to also hold a combo in it? I just don't have a ton of experience with/against the list. Edit: I didn't realize Rob wa...

Re: Is the Boros Guild Racist?

Could we not? This is a card game, not a governmental body with the ability to actually change people's lives. Use your effort to sway legislators , not WotC staff or other players. The cards WotC banned were already good enough because they actually had real symbols from the past (even if you don't...

Re: [M21] Terror of the Peaks

Someone posted on reddit that this combos with Sporeweb Weaver and Heroic Intervention . Hit the spider over and over as Saprolings cause the Dragon to trigger. Gain life, gain Saps, profit. Probably not overly competitive but I was planning on some jank with the two creatures anyway, now there is r...

Re: [M21] Kaervek, the Spiteful - The Magic Arcanum preview

That 2 toughness is sooo deliberate... Black is all -2/-2 sweepers in all the recent sets. You can get the one time upgrade to -3/-3 now. You can still cheat the legend rule and get that -2/-2 by casting a second one though, I like that, was a fun trick with Betrayal. I'm sorta disappointed that the...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I like the way you're talking. I think we agree pretty well. I'd love to see the rise in relevance of 2cmc multi-color (or double pip mono-color) removal. Black can have their seat on high with Push, that's sorta their thing. I'd love to see a 2cmc "Counter target Creature or Planeswalker spell", ve...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

That's fair. Generally speaking, you're right, I define answers as non-persistent and responsive. Loosely a "one question, one answer" mentality. The main issue I take is not that answers (my definition) are too weak, it's that threats are too strong/efficient. You can only make things so cheap and ...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

M21 in general seems to be an increase to the power level of answers I think some people, myself included, will roll their eyes a bit at this statement and say that Containment Priest and Runed Halo aren't really "answers" they are Prison cards and sideboard queens (hate cards). They're right up th...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I'm going to try to keep the trees and forest analogy. You mentioned 7 cards (of 10) that are currently legal but should be banned. They "are 100% too much" by your words. So we agree that Pioneer is on fire, awesome. You mention that other formats are also on fire; again, we agree. The forest is on...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I don't think Pioneer is fine. Answers are too weak compared to threats. I think the format needs both bannings and printings to fix the issue, but fundamentally WotC needs to get their heads out of the sand. I don't really want to compare Modern to Pioneer, the continual cross format jockeying for ...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I mean, I get it about Fires, but Yorion hits the deck hard time, especially in Pioneer, you remember how mediocre to bad it was pre-Lukka, pre-Yorion. I think it's possible that with no Yorion, the deck will be at most tier 2, maybe worse. Agent is just one payoff, and quite honestly, isn't he a m...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

Ya, I had hoped Yorion would catch some flak there. I agree. After those two, I'd probably wait a little bit and reconsider Fires of Invention; the card doesn't seem to have a middle ground for power, it either breaks something or is a non-factor. Cards like that strike me as good ban targets becaus...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I think you and I should just agree to disagree about the Modern thread. What would your list of ban criteria be? The way I'm reading the data you posted and assuming it's what you consider credible, I would be banning some more than just Lurrus. Maybe not immediately, but there would be more on my ...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I do hope things return to a time when eternal formats were more stable. I'd agree that Pioneer is likely easier to fix than Modern is but we don't actually even know what Pioneer is. The format isn't even a year old, it's never had "pillars" the way Modern had, it's identity is too similar to Moder...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

You're probably just going to find the same things in this thread as the Modern thread right now only with slightly different issues but very similar. Companion is too pervasive, removal is bad, linear speed and/or cheating mana is king, too much consistency (see companion). Pioneer has it's issues....

Re: Print this Wizards (so we can play it in Pioneer)

I've been thinking about how Companion probably should have been done. I think this is my take on the whole situation. The companions themselves could remain as are minus the Companion ability with the Triomes taking on the adjusted functionality. BUG Triome Land - Swamp Forest Island ---- Homeworld...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I don't feel like I'm familiar enough with Prison decks to make too many judgements about them. The times I've encountered the Modern variety of them, I have viewed them as interesting puzzles and half-mirror control matches. I try to stay with one or two formats at most, last I was able to do anyth...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

They will actively try to avoid bans in Pioneer, far more so than any other format, because it had such a churn at its inception. Funny thing is that I feel like that's what made it such an interesting format. Nothing was safe at the top so everyone at local levels played unconventional decks. The ...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

This gives them both an intermediate format where Standard graduates can go Given that we have three different combo decks sitting at the top or near the top of the meta, I'm not overly confident things are set up to accept "Standard graduates". I'm not a huge fan of combo but I do think it should ...

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I feel like most of the people that follow this thread play in paper or play Modern on MTGO. Since LGSs are all closed I think this thread is pretty stalled for awhile. Maybe I'm mistaken but the drop off seems to have happened once isolation orders started becoming common. From a distance (I only p...

When this thing EtBs do you get to know what they are targeting before you respond to the trigger or do they choose on resolution? The wording is "put" so I'm unsure. I think it's respond with no knowledge?

I think the Godzilla theme is pretty funny. Not for me, but very funny to see. I was honestly very surprised that this even happened.

Is the BAB the only art for that card? If it is, that's my biggest disappointment.

Re: [Official] State of Pioneer Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

The real issue is the "win the game" text on Oracle, let's be more direct about the issue. I think we all know Oracle isn't about to be banned since it's in Standard. The other option is Inverter and I really hate to see Inverter go because it is a very interesting card, but let's be honest with our...
