Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I have heard in the past people making the argument that Modern (and presumably Pioneer) need better, more universal answer cards that will take care of most of the future "problem cards". I never really agreed with that position, instead favoring threats over answers because it leads to ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Hard disagree. Modern is absolute trash. The minor problem coming out of the latest set is Death's Shadow decks getting a 2cmc 10/10. The major problem is Uro/Omnath/Field of the Dead decks. I have now legit quit magic because of those decks. Can't fight them on a value axis, because Uro and Field. ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I'd like to quickly revisit some "controversial" cards that have been in the format now for a while (completely ignoring the Oops All Spells deck looming over us all because I happen to believe once people get their bearings, the deck will settle in a similar spot to Neobrand, aka borderli...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

To me GTron is close to a pure ramp deck. 8 tutors for fetching the pieces needed to ramp, a sweeper to buy time and then a bunch of huge threats+filler cards in cantrips. Granted, Baby-Karn and Ballista have massively improved Tron's curve, but ramping to 7 mana on turn 3 is still the name of the g...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

the thing is that Veil being overpowered can easily be argued in a vacuum. There really is no need to put it in a metagame context imo. Because while there are a lot of playable non-interactive cards in blue and black, the majority of playable cards in these colors is in fact interactive. Any counte...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Sorry if I'm bringing up a chewed-threw topic, but what are we thinking about Veil of Summer at this point? It has survived multiple BR announcements by now. Ignoring the Companion-ban announcement, which Veil survived because the companion mechanic was stealing the spotlight, when Veil of Summer w...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I have to say I'm getting sick of trying to combat yet another strategy bolstered by a pushed card out of Modern Horizons. Wotc were on a no win scenario on mh1, because they needed cards to impact, but their design philosophy dictates that none of them can be hard and nasty answers that stop stuff...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I'm fully aware that data on competitive modern is extremely scarce right now, but does anybody else feel like Rx Prowess is getting annoyingly omnipresent? It's everywhere in leagues. Between Mono R, UR Stormwing and BR, Prowess very roughly makes up 15% of decks. And the main driving force behind ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Tbh I think it could be worth a try to release it on a trial period. Release it with the explicit intention to reban if this and this and that happens, with a specific reban/evaluation date set. Exclusively look at win %, not how widely it is played (so neither hype nor willful supression of numbers...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I think its super weird that the survival of modern depends on its implementation on Arena. Personally, I find the style of Arena annoying as hell. all those flashy animations... MTGO much more closely represents the core traits of mtg as a strategic card game. Don't all serious modern players just ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Compare that to clinging it, where you gain 3 life, don't give them a free land, and can escape Cling for value down the line. That's basically a clean trade with Uro. Path is miles away from that. To be fair, Cling isn't AS clean as one might argue, you're still down a Card and they lost something...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I'm not understanding the problem with White dealing with Uro. They literally have our format's most efficient removal for it in Path to Exile . Yeah, you give them a land, and no that doesn't feel good, but what other commonly played removal spell permanently deals with that Uro? And for 1 mana? P...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

White needs something to stop Uro being cast. After it has been cast it has too much value. It is not, I think you would agree, absurdly powerful to print the following: "WW enchantment when [] comes into play name a creature card. That card cannot be played from the hand or graveyard. Scry 2&...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Creature heavy white decks need an answer to Uro, and path is not it. Answers are a decade behind threats, not a set or two. Generally those people who think answers are good and are matched by threats are those bought up on more modern Mtg. If you have been exposed to stuff like energy standard, t...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Pioneer seems unplayably bad right now. Top decks are all combos that are difficult or impossible to interact with: Inverter, Lotus Breach, and Heliod. Seems miserable. Probably why online events are apparently not even firing, because nobody wants to play that format. I don't have any stake in Pio...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I disagree with alsmost ALL of those tbh. Punishing Fire would still push small creatures out of the format. Preordain? I guess, why not. Green Sun's Zenith? Devoted Devastation and Elves have tons of tutors as it is. And having the option of Dryad-ramp is still busted. Bridge from Below? Would inde...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

You know what I really hope this ban accomplishes? That would actually bring me joy? That all the UGxx 3-4c snow control piles fade, and make room for 1) a dedicated, no-nonsense Simic Uro Coatl Reclamation deck that basically carries the UG flag and the Snow flag and still makes Coatl and Uro work ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Not to take away from the Astrolabe-ban, which is correct, but it's really frustrating to me that they, once again, didn't even mention Veil of Summer . That's almost worse than the fact that they didn't ban it. It's like it's not even on their radar. Like it's nothing. They MUST be aware of the pro...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Here is the problem with this argument: If you continue it ad infinitum, the conclusion is that basically everything except card draw, ramp, maybe life gain and a few other things rhat actually dont impact opp at all, are interactive. Now lets be honest: this is absolutely not what people mean when ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

That would be super akward, if there was a massive, unjustified hype around a deck like Neobrand, and all of a sudden, 25% of people just played Neobrand for the hell of it. And Wizards is sitting there, looking at its stats, and go "but... but it's only winning 45% of non-mirror matches, do we...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

To be clear, I have never understood the hate towards T3feri. I play grixis control so I should be severely impacted by it, but having Snaps/Bolts/Kolaghan's Command appearently makes killing a T3feri much more trivial than it is for non-red control decks. It's already kind of unlikely to resolve an...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Imo Veil would actually the more important ban, but Astrolabe is the more likely one. Also, has anybody else had massive problems vs Burn? Them occasionally casting Rift Bolt into a 6/6 trample on turn 2, and doing the same thing extremely consistently on turn 3 has been really back-breaking for me....
