Re: "Quirks That Define Your EDH Style"

1. I have a strong preference for 2 color decks with lots of basics. I like elegant manabases, and after playing Thrasios+Vial Smasher for a few months, I got sick of looking at a mess where my Islands should've been and took it apart. 2. Lots of interaction. 3. A real-deal kill condition so I can e...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

I've had tons of fun playing Modern lately. Played against this GW Elvish Reclaimer / Knight of the Reliquary brew with 27 lands. Felt a bit like Legacy Maverick. It was sweet. I'm 100% here for Modern right now. Yeah, Prime Time is annoying, but there are clear solutions to it for most decks other ...

Veil might be fine in this new landscape. The card's good, but it's ultimately a bullet.

Ban Oko.

Unban Preordain, GXZ, Pod, Twin. The power level in the format is, at worst, equal to the best of these cards, thanks to 2019.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 12/16/2019)

I'm anti-ban in general and I'm playing 3x Oko in my RUG Delver brew. But I'm 3 matches deep in a league, having played against Affinity, BUG Urza, and UG Titan. Oko in every deck. It's not necessarily dominant, but it seems homogenizing.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/18/2019)

tempo is a fun archetype as your always on the edge of just getting blown out. UR Delver is viable-ish again. Mystic Sanctuary gives it lots of play. I've been on RUG Delver for two years now and while I'm in no danger of spiking an SCG Open with it, it provides tons and tons of super fun play both...

Re: Deck Choice V. Format Satisfaction

1. RUG Delver
2. Tempo
3. Probably 4/5. I think Modern has been mostly tons of fun during my current stint, Winter 2017-present, with the exception of Hogaak summer.

Re: [Deck] Zombie Loam

I played this deck back right after Raph Levy debuted it up until the printing of Prized Amalgam, and then briefly on mtgo around last Christmas. I was curious what would happen after cycle lands and especially the Looting ban, since it was the best card in the deck. My inclination was to go straigh...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 10/21/2019)

I agree that if you enjoy a favorite pet deck and can play it consistently, feelings of the format can be drastically improved. I have a buddy that started enjoying modern so much more when he found a deck he really enjoyed in merfolk and did really well with it. Definitely not t1 but he loves it A...

Re: Banlist Speculation

Is the sweet Mono Blue Tempo list from a few standards ago with Curious Obsession and Spell Pierce going to be playable with some tweaks? I mean, you get Dig Through Time for a few weeks.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

BUG Vengevine seems to be a thing. Vengevine shell plus Hedron Crab plus the reach of Creeping Chill, one of the most egregiously badly designed cards in recent memory.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Although I have to say it felt bad watching T3feri completely destroying Jund's ability to interact.[/b] The card is an absolute abomination to not only Modern, but Magic in general. It is awful design and promotes awful gameplay. Unfortunately, cards don't get banned for creating terrible and obno...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

They've got to ban Hogaak, but I also think they have a vested interest to move slowly with bans. Imagine, after months of Hogaak summer when they already punted on a ban decision, they went through and gutted the format with the blanket bans on stuff some people are talking about. Even if that's th...

Stoneforge, Pod, Preordain, Twin. Gave consideration to GSZ but under my scheme green midrange already gets one card.

Re: What are your first decks in Modern?

I've been on RUG Delver exclusively since the start of 2019 and while I've toyed with getting a second deck, I've found that attacking with undercosted beaters while holding up Spell Pierce is everything I want to do in Modern, and I'm getting to the point where my knowledge of the deck and its mat...

Re: [Deck] Temur Delver

Wrenn and Six is new but has been quite good and I'm committed to giving it an extended try. DANG! That's awesome. Can you discuss your reasoning for including him and what kind of roles he plays for the deck? Couple of factors: 1. The local Jund guy said it was nuts. I said I didn't have anything ...

Re: [Deck] Temur Delver

I'm a confirmed Hexdrinker player. Against the Wrenn and Six decks, I just don't play it until I can level it right away, or if I can Force a possible W6. Personally, I've enjoyed the freedom from playing Thought Scour, and the I-win button that Hexdrinker is in the late game against the grindy deck...

Re: What are your first decks in Modern?

8 Rack was my first (thanks, Rob). Then I built Loam Pox, which Raphael Levy was working on from late 2014 until the printing of Prized Amalgam. This card and the ensuing rise of Dredge really ruined a bunch of interesting graveyard decks. Alas. Took a break from July 2016 or so, right before the bi...

Re: Your top five favourite modern cards

Spell Pierce Lightning Bolt Hexdrinker Blood Moon Ancient Grudge All from my longterm deck, RUG Delver. Pierce is so underrated in Modern. Bolt is just classic, especially with Christopher Rush art. Hexdrinker is a card I picked out early on as great for my archetype, and it has been good early and ...
