Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I still feel like Tron is a very overrated deck in the format. I get that it gets a power boost from the one ring, so maybe it gains some ground here. But I'm surprised it has done as well as it has on mtgo over the past couple years. I still think the deck has consistency problems.

Pioneer doesn't interest me much either because of how pushed new standard sets are.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Somewhat off subject, but since War of the Spark, new releases incrementally became larger. That is, they contain more rares and mythics per set. As of late, we are now averaging about 150 rares and 50 mythics per set. Contrast that with the previous period where releases contained about 50 rares an...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The biggest offenders to me are Ragavan, Urza's Saga, and the free evoke on elementals. Other stuff is problematic too but less pressing at the moment. It wouldn't surprise me if they don't ban anything, but my personal bias makes me lean towards another round of bannings similar to February's 2021 ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I read the David articles and appreciate his nuanced approach to the metagame. But I didn't like his write-up on Hammer time; how can he not mention Uzra's Saga as a problematic card? He even mentions that Hammer Time wins by stretching opponent's resources but then goes on to say Colossus Hammer ne...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The meta would actually be pretty good if we could ban some of the MH2 stuff. Merfolk is still hanging around, Titanshift is making a comeback, and Mono-Black Coffers is a deck that's trying to gain traction. It's just too easy to gain card advantage off of some of the newer cards that other strateg...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

It's rare I see rogue decks anymore at the local level. And the general public's lack of outrage towards MH2 is completely baffling to me.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

The meta isn't bad in the sense that it has a Hogaak or Eye of Ugin wrecking the format. But cards like Wrenn and Six (and others) remind me of Deathrite Shaman before its ban in legacy.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Triomes are low-key a problem. On the surface they look bad, coming in tapped and the cycling being so overcosted. But they're a ramped up version of the amonkhet cycle lands. And they can be fetched on a turn where you don't need the untapped land, minimizing the impact of coming in tapped.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

They would never compensate people for buying banned Ragavans. And there probably won't be MH2 bans until January. The set doesn't go out of print until December.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Elementals, Ragavan, Dragon's Rage Channeler, and Urza's Saga are what I think are problematic. I hope W6 and Omnath stay but obviously wouldn't be surprised if they got cut. Errata on evoke is something I would like to see as well.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I'm in favor of reprinting reserve list cards but nevermind legacy, even modern is in trouble. Of the 2 card stores near me, the one hasn't fired a modern tournament in over a year. Edh is doing good, and online pokemon card sales are good, and that's about it. Furthermore, managers tell me the play...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

In addition to the prior mentioned problems, I very much dislike the abolishment of the DCI system. Furthermore, stores in the area have moved away from store credit and now only award boosters.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Three best cards in 4 color piles are wrenn and six, abundant growth, and yorion. Personally I want to see yorion go (along with all companions). Just a personal preference.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Pitch elementals are cool and I really like them, but they have too many design mistakes. Pitching a card is not enough of a cost, and a mana cost should have been added to them as well, similar to mulldrifter costing 3 to evoke. Flash on solitude is problematic too. Evoke Fury commonly kills 2 or m...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Prismatic Ending has all the design mistakes of Green Sun's Zenith when you think about it. It fits nicely in the one drop slot, but still makes a great top deck at any other turn in the game. It makes the deckbuilding too easy.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I didn't play modern at all in June and only once in May. In part because of declining attendance and a stale meta. The discord server says only 2 people showed to Modern the last outing. I'm gonna sit out the rest of the year until something changes. Whether that be sweeping bans or a reprint set. ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I dislike the bannings of simian spirit guide and mox opal. These decks were more vulnerable to discard and removal. Now I feel the format is too midrange-y.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I just played Gruul Midrange today actually with carlosalmeida's list. Started out 2-0 but then bombed out, losing to amulet titan and hammer time. All the games were very lopsided, I didn't like it. Either blood moon would blow out stuff like urza's saga or you didn't draw blood moon and lose. Wren...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

There is a Titanshift deck list running around. I was actually curious how good it is because I have enjoyed playing Titanshift in the past. :) They're not bad. Went 2-2 with a Titan breach my last Fnm outing. If the mill player hadn't drawn 3 archive trap I would've been 3-1. And I made some mista...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Money pile is the 4 color omnath decks with yorion, you can find decklists on mtg goldfish. And RG Ponza should be respectable without Wrenn and Ragavan but I would limit play to FNM type of stuff. Check out some fringe lists on the mtgo leagues for more deckbuilding ideas. Anyways, I just wanted to...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I like the tournament report, I miss reading them when paper play was more popular.

Anyway, if $100 is a fair price for a draft booster box, what's a fair price on a collector booster box?
