Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

Well... I pop out for a year; lo and behold, my opinion hasn't changed since my last post. T3f and veil still make the esper tools just feel awful. The control freaks discord, that spun out of this thread on the old salvation boards, keeps doubling every time I look at membership. Discord really did...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

I'm still on not-esper. Fundamentally, I think it just costs too much to beat the titan decks while still having outs to all the random decks packing t3feri, veil of summer, and cavern of souls. The decklists people have put up some successes, sure, but it's really high variance. There were several ...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

A lot of y'all seem laser-focused on teferi, time raveler. I think that focus is misguided. In modern, the card is not actually that good. It's incredibly powerfully hateful against our deck and in our deck. But, against the format writ large, it's generally a bounce/draw effect with some flavor tex...

Re: [Official] Modern Prices Discussion

What are people's thoughts on Prismatic Vista price rising? Was surprised to see it's more expensive than any khans fetch now, it's above 30 dollars already. Will this go higher or lower? I am unsure of its value, seems commander is driving the price up to. But over the other fetchs im not sure why...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

There are two kinds of "stoneblade" decks: Those that want to be a control deck, which are both bad and popular, and there are those that want to be a midrange deck. Thank you, Amalek0! I reread your post four times to make sure I understood it all - so much excellent analysis! Are we boa...

Re: [Official] Modern Prices Discussion

Amalek0 perhaps 10-15 dollar for foil mystic sanctuary? My price estimate is based on the price of foil arcum's astrolabe , because the astrolabe is a common seeing plenty of play now both in modern and pauper. bad comparison. Packs are 1/3 the price and the foils are twice as frequent in the packs...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I'm actually not a fan of the looting ban, for several reasons. First, I don't think it specifically was justified. The biggest offenders were decks abusing mechanics that cheated on mana in other ways, and we saw it used incredibly powerfully in other shells. I think the things it enabled may have ...

Re: [Official] Modern Prices Discussion

the big question for me is mystic sanctuary foils. Those things go in every frickin' format and have incredible late-game looping power in both pauper and legacy. Hell, even vintage *could* consider playing one, though I doubt it.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I think people are blowing whirza out of proportion. There's a number of things the deck IS just weak to, and it's benefiting right now from a format that *was* very heavy on precision grave-hate, and light on artifact hate, shifting to a sideboard arms race against big mana and midrange decks inste...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

Hi all - new to the board but have enjoyed reading all these great posts! I am taking my first modern Esper build to FNM and I'm excited and nervous. While Stoneblade is not exactly taking the meta by storm, I feel like that is a completely unwinnable matchup. I've seen builds on mtgtop that jam 14...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

On this, was this Mono U fish or something else? Something I haven't seen a lot of as of late and think matches very well against us especially with Vial dropping stuff in on our turn or cavern of souls. I have seen spoken to the one pure fish guy at my lgs who said he still mains Korpala and a Kir...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I think part of the lesson of that challenge is that stoneblade decks (and fair decks in general) seem not to have cracked the whirza problem other than "race it".

Re: [Poll] Is your wallet fatigued in this format?

I wouldn't say my wallet is fatigued so much as my tolerances for WOTC's marketing techniques are dropping rapidly. Like most people, I have a rough budget of how much I spend on MTG "stuff"--everything from events, travel, sleeves, cards, etc. When singles are cheaper, I buy more of them,...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

They're not going to forego Field of Ruin though. FoR is much better than these lands, it is one of the big reasons to be straight UW over 3 colors to begin with.. Hard disagree. I had a ton of success recently with a 23 land build of UW control packing zero field of ruins; I instead opted to build...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

[mention]TheAnnihilator[/mention] I'm not a fan of the layout (putting it before the generic sideboard card discussion). I think you want to start out with a more general description of the matchup, then about different plans for beating jund, then talking about specific card choices. Something like...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

TheAnnihilator Crib from the old MTGSalv primer. Most of the advice is still valid because it doesn't focus on specific cards, but rather on coordinated and cohesive gameplans. The problem with doing anything else is that it doesn't address the two components everyone who wants to play this archety...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

ktkenshinx I think the list of modern-playables at this point is still quite small: I would add the rare castle cycle of lands in mono-colored decks. So the blue one in merfolk, grren in elves, white in life-gain, red in mono-red aggro variants, etc. castle ardenvale castle vantress castle lochtwai...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

[mention]Bearscape[/mention] remember that dead/gone is mostly a dead card if shock isn't good enough. The new giant is a 3 mana 4/3 creature. The floor is a lot higher because it can still actually just be a clock in the matchups where you *might* want to have a shock (for example, to answer dark c...

Not as much as when I was in undergrad, because now I work full-time *AND* am doing grad school, but I'm still doing "magic stuff" basically every friday (FNM, judging/modern/draft/legacy), Sunday (modern 4-6 rounds), and occasionally monday (legacy). I've prepped with a group of people ev...

Re: What are your first decks in Modern?

I went something like this: UG Post->UR Storm->UWr Control->UR Storm->UW Control->Esper control/valakut-titan (2014-present) at least for "primary" deck. I own a bunch of decks but I typically only have one I would bring to a competitive event; for the last year or so it's been a tossup be...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

I don't THINK we're in the market for a 2/3 lifelink for 3 mana, even against burn. I don't think we're in the market for hero's downfall. I think what we actually want is a 2 mana dreadbore at instant speed, even if at some kind of life cost or something. Or a kicker version that killed a cmc restr...

Re: Box-mapping, when did it "end"?

It's more than that--When you're cracking a few cases, like 15-20, but not hundreds of cases, you care a bit more about your "box hits" and "case hits". Typically, there's one foil mythic per case (six boxes) and one foil rare per box (box hit). You also have typically 3-4 mythic...
