Re: Automated Commander Power Level Evaluation

I see this thread is still active months latre, how has the data been further assessed, for lack of a better word. Please, spare me the technical jargon I won't get. I'm out of gas on making up point rules after exhausting most of my knowledge - I might try going through a few of my old decks and c...

stop nerfing comander korvold is fine the real problem is combo even if you get al the good generals baned combo will still be there
Apply some next level thinking as to why people are attracted to combo when the format is so loaded with oppressive value engines in the command zone now.

Re: [MCD] Rhystic Study & Mystic Remora

Does drawing 1 card per spell the non-creature player plays for... what, 2 maybe 3 turns automatically turn into a win? Especially if the non-creature player plays smart and sticks to playing their more expensive spells until the remora is gone or they're going off? In my experience it does one of ...

Re: SCD: Golos, Tired-Ass Pilgrim

I don't think golos can be built in "fun" ways, interesting ways sure, but he applies insane pressure to the board forever. It's fine if you don't use his ability but otherwise it's just going to overpower most games with the value. Believe me I tried. Even my monocolored golos decks were oppressive...

Re: [MCD] Rhystic Study & Mystic Remora

Mystic Remora's tax is definitely more difficult to play around...but your opponents could just play creatures. Sit down at the wrong table with the fish and it's not that great anymore. If you're going to sit down at a cEDH table, powerful cards are just par for the course. It's not like there are...

Ramos, Dragon Engine (sort of a niche theme deck where everything costs either 6 or 9 mana). https://media1.tenor.com/images/3461e5e1c6741e28cef5e60607283fd8/tenor.gif?itemid=4879781 Dovescape is a card I don't think I would cater to with dedicated slots in your deck, esp not taplands; 99% of the t...

Re: Automated Commander Power Level Evaluation

Just a note that I've updated the magic card database for this, although none of the cards are added to the rules data yet.

If anyone has any interest in doing some work on the rules set for this please let me know. I'm happy to update it as needed, it's pretty easy to do.

Re: [MCD] Rhystic Study & Mystic Remora

It has definitely been my experience that Rhystic Study is *dominant* in lower powered metas. I don't know why people don't pay but they don't. :P (They're also less likely to be able to remove it) It's also worth noting that it's very high on the salt list. Which is part of the reason for the threa...

Re: [MCD] Rhystic Study & Mystic Remora

I actually think they perform MORE as decks get more tuned. Paying an extra one when playing a titan isn't a big deal but paying one multiple times in a turn is far more detrimental. Tuned decks tend to chain spells and so it actually hurts them a lot more when your goal is to cast 2-4 spells in a ...

Re: Achieving next level deckbuilding

Ok so I got to brewing Heliod, Sun-Crowned immediately and started with defining what the deck wants to do as @darrenhabib said. Then I just gathered a synergy pile as mentioned by @pokken. After i got the synergy pile together I reordered them according to function like a traditional template. I c...

4 boardwipes At least 10 "interaction" cards, at least 3 of which should be boardwipes of some sort. Re: Achieving next level deckbuilding

I'd say you're at the point where all that ratio nonsense reveals itself to be what it is: a crutch. Chuck all the stuff and ask yourself what you want the deck to do. I am going to talk primarily about white cards since you're talking about building Heliod, and it's also my best color in EDH. One "...

[MCD] Rhystic Study & Mystic Remora

Mystic Remora rhystic study These cards are different and tend to exist in slightly different metas, but both of them are cards I think somehow fly under the radar for banning despite that: 1) Literally everyone hates them to the point "did you pay 1/4?" is almost a meme 2) They provide way too muc...

Re: [SCD] Thrasios, Triton Hero

I think we disagree on two points, 1) what is acceptable at the upper power levels, and 2) what gets and ought to get cards banned in EDH. And that's fine. Playing against Thrasios is not the same as playing against the acute bomb commanders (e.g. Animar) because of his extreme flexibility and low c...

Re: Kykar, Wind’s Fury

I honestly do not know that I would play anything that kills Kykar in a Kykar deck. Rift, winds of abandon, aetherize, comeuppance, so many good options that continue steamrolling your tokens army. Hour of Revelation is about as far as I'd go I think, and only because it's so efficient and gets the ...

Re: [mtgnexus] Random Card of the Day - Mulldrifter

I like mulldrifter and I'll play it in places it really makes sense, but to me effects that say "etb/cast draw a card" are not all that interesting in commander outside of cantrips. I prefer to draw my cards through shenanigans. That's probably a fine distinction but I'm more likely to look for a co...

Re: [SCD] Thrasios, Triton Hero

Tymna is a good magic card but really only exceptional in cedh because the lack of sweepers and blockers. The average fat is too high for her in even most high power games. It's tricksy. In high power decks tymna and kydele becomes a real question. Is tasigur and better Mana worth giving up white? I...

That's one heck of a take. ...because let's face it Linvala and ScOoze are sideboard cards too, but are maindeck-able solely on the basis of having P/T and cards like Birthing Pod. Like I said, I'll dive into that in another thread if you want. It's just my intuitive take on it from playing a lot a...

Re: [SCD] Thrasios, Triton Hero

Linvala, Keeper of Silence is a card I play a lot that craps on both strategies pretty well. Most of those decks can't win if you stick and protect a Linvala. But that's not like a thing you can guarantee doing. I hate the idea of building more decks around Cursed Totem , that feels toxic to me to ...

Re: [SCD] Thrasios, Triton Hero

That we CAN have different experiences against Thrasios, and that you can look to meta power level as an explanation, proves that Thrasios isn't so much the issue as the way the deck is built. Because we share the same experience with Golos, and that means that my experience with him across power l...

Re: Quick shoutout for some good designs (imo)

See Ephara, God of the Polis → Chulane, Teller of Tales for my statement of profound agreement on this issue :) I really approve of this design paradigm where you don't make things scale so absurdly - Ephara would be a lot more boring if she straight up drew a card every time a creature entered but ...
