Re: Achieving next level deckbuilding

Another one of those great threads, with a lot of fantastic insight. I'm going to amplify some of the signal that's already come up, while mixing in some bits of my own. I'll use my Daxos deck to illustrate the points. Every deck needs a mission statement. A quick little elevator pitch, if you will ...

Re: Daxos, Reunion Tour

Huh, I hadn't thought of womboing Heliod's Mattress Emporium with sagas. On the whole, I've found them ragingly underwhelming - they land, do some stuff and go on their merry way, never feeling like they merit the mana investment. Seems pretty cute though :P Bonders' Enclave is also an interesting i...

Re: Kykar, Wind's Fury - Jeskai Tokens

So here's a bit of a hot take - there are already cards in the list you're willingly not running for power reasons. As such, you're not hamstringed by a pursuit of perfection and are completely free to just jam this in if you feel like it. Give it some spins, see how it does.

Re: [Off-Topic] Community Chat Thread

Heh, me reading the recent discourse in the thread has informed Big Brother that I'm in the market for a gaming PC and my Facebook ads are now crawling with PC building. Amusing. Still not as spooky as targeted ads for batteries popping up after I bought a pack of Duracells at the local supermarket ...

Re: Strategies and commanders for higher player count

I remember that 2014 EDH starter me had a similar conceptual problem - given the fact that there's three foes on 40 to take down rather than one foe on 20, what sort of stuff is even viable here? My first two decks were global ping and Seedborn Muse -style stuff, and I've enjoyed this strategy compo...

Re: Ghired, Conclave Exile - Triple Dipping Naya Lards

Oh, I have occasionally copied Battledriver , but returns are just better with the dedicated beatsticks. Name a non- Hoof ETB pump that doesn't get put to shame by Thunderfoot Baloth , which is already in contention for least good beatstick. The exponential stacking of Boomgoat is crazy good when co...

Re: Patron of the Orochi - The Cockroach Tron

Finally, a (dual) set release and nothing for Patron. This is a good thing - green has had plenty of ridiculous stuff thrown its way in recent years, and one can hope that this is a sign of WotC acknowledging it and trying to do something about it. Garruk's Uprising and Elder Gargaroth are both kind...

M21/JMP Change Curtain. R&D offices. FRED and STEVE, the brains behind Nyxbloom Ancient , just got a standing ovation for Fiery Emancipation and are coasting on the glory in a post-meeting brainstorm session. Re: Feather, the Redeemed - Weaponised Jankmas Incarnate

Another bunch of sets, another bunch of nothing for Feather. Unleash Fury is a pretty cool option for voltron builds, as you can drop it at the end of a pump sequence and it will still stack with double strike. But that's about it really. Angelic Ascension could theoretically offer a Path -style dua...

Out: 1 Thran Dynamo In: 1 Chromatic Orrery At some point in Trap Rock testing, I showed a Whift with enough power to take out the table and scooped out to let the guys finish. https://i.imgur.com/pH6SWJL.jpg The all-permanent wipes seem kind of risky, especially with your mana moving from big lands to rocks. Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

I had what might well be my shortest-lived adventure with a deck yet - I built Golos shrines. I figured I may as well double down on the meme factor, and went Opalescence into de-legend clones to get even more copies of the shrines. Seemed funny on paper, so I tossed a list together and got a friend...

Re: Basic Lands for Commander Decks - Mountains

It would appear we've drifted towards general basics chatter. I can get behind that :P I think basics had their golden age between MMQ and ONS. The combination of the old border with the simple symbol design does it for me. I've got a set of lovely ODY options in my draft box. However, this doesn't ...

Wheel of Sun and Moon is kind of eh as far as grave hate goes. You don't have the creature density for Aura Shards . Removal should come function first, form distant second. I'd shave the various Oblivion Ring variants, apart from Grasp of Fate , that one's pretty dece. Gift of Paradise is woefully...

Re: Ephara, God of the Polis - Flash & Taxes

Intruder Alarm was a formidable value/combo piece in my Kumena fishsticks deck. Draw for days, untapping and shenanigans in other people's turns. Might be up your street. That Barrin is likely legit, it also leaked earlier as part of a larger batch that has just about entirely come true by now, and...

Re: Ghired, Conclave Exile - Triple Dipping Naya Lards

Elder Gargaroth falls into the oft perused category of "oh damn!", i.e. you look at the card and are awestruck by its awesomeness. R&D have gotten really good at making Timmy stuff recently. However, closer inspection reveals some problems with its candidature for a beatstick slot in my list: It sc...

Hello and welcome! Yeti's got it right, Flameshadow Conjuring and Twinflame are both very good, and I'd say they round off the podium of the three best red ones after Kiki . The weakest ones in my shell are Splinter Twin and Flamerush Rider . While they're both nominally repeatable, they're a bit mo...

Re: Daxos the Returned - Enchantment Speed Bumps Galore

Their point was along the lines of "at seven you should be doing impactful plays, not ramping". They're not wrong, but Daxos is hardly done ramping with seven mana on the field. The filtering is not the main selling point, but it is a cute perk. In mega mana mode, squeezing out that extra couple spi...

Interesting, I haven't thought much of Demonic Embrace , maybe because I've gone my separate ways with Fallen Ideal and THB also had its spin on recur-an-aura with Sentinel's Eyes . Fair enough. Sorry, I'm underslept.

I'd say Ageless Insight > Archive in non-lifegain scenarios, including here. Cheaper, less perishable permanent type. Seems good. That said, is this even a sort of thing that you want to run in here?

Elesh Norn would be wicked good here, yes. I don't play her to avoid being a douche to my opposition, same reason there's no Aura Shards or Yosei locks. If your group won't bust out the pitchforks on you for this, by all means go right ahead. And don't forget you can get a brief blip of increased -...

Re: Unreleased and New Card Discussion

The mad lads did it. They somehow printed a 200+ dollar card in a core set. In fairness, this is a PR stunt if there ever was one. Grim Tutor does not see widespread use, and is only this much money because approximately three copies got printed back in 1999. As such, it's the perfect card to put up...

Who in the hell would blow removal on a Rampant Hawk? :P

It's a good card, in slower games in a mid power group. Someone has more lands and no fliers, always. That said, this Ephara would eat my group alive.
