Re: State of Legacy Thread

Agreed. I was not really expecting anything more than Lurrus but at least they had the foresight to hit Zirda as well.

Some people we're convinced that Astrolabe would be banned but that was delusional/wishful thinking.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Jim Davis had a good take on Companions in that, rather than existing outside the game as a bonus extra card, at the beginning of the game you could reveal your companion, put it in your hand, and then draw one fewer cards to start with. The abilities of some are still nuts, and the "restricti...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

If Mishra's Bauble or Monastery Swiftspear get banned I may finally quit playing Modern all together. I'm not one for hyperbole and I also really like Modern. I just don't enjoy switching decks every 4 months, I play non rotating formats for a reason. Getting to experiment and become expert with a d...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

Interestingly, the problems with Lurrus are sounding more and more like Hogaak. It's too reliable/consistent and it utilizes the graveyard as a resource in a way that other magic decks are not capable of doing.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

The April 15 B&R announcement regarding Lutri in Brawl is pretty Interesting to get a view into the design/play test process. This is just an excerpt. The whole is here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/april-13-2020-banned-and-restricted-announcement This isn't an oversight or...

Re: State of Legacy Thread

Companion is definitely going to cause problems. It's is either going to lead to super OP broken decks or it might just homogenize the format around 3-4 cards. I get the feeling that it will make every deck with a companion play like a combo deck. Obviously these decks can okay without them but they...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 03/09/2020)

I think it is probably for the better that they do not do a ton of testing in Modern. Look at the formats that they test for: limited and standard. Do we really want Modern to be more like that? Alternatively, look at the formats with less involvement from WotC: Commander and Legacy. Which formats h...

Re: State of Legacy Thread

There's a guy at my LGS who plays it regularly and does very well. You get to mainboard Veil of Summer to protect your combo which is a pretty nice upside for very little cost.

Re: State of Legacy Thread

motleyslayer i would think that Reanimator would be fine against Oko. Most Oko decks are relatively slow so you should be able to go off before they can set up. I would be more concerned about Veil if Summer than Oko. I've seen a number of Simic Omnitell decks doing well lately, which might be anot...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

No worries! I think something like that could go a long way to balancing snow decks without any collateral damage. I think the ability to destroy basic snow lands would be a very interesting angle because right now there is literally no downside to running snow basics but lots of upside. I'd much ra...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

However, I think a "destroy snow permanent" 1 or 2 cmc instant spell would be very good. Blowing up basic lands is a pretty powerful ability and it would allow you to take Astrolabe/Snake offline.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

There's a ton of interesting, relevant topics to discuss about modern, like wether viewing Astrolabe's mana-fixing abilities vis a vis fetchlands is a reasonable comparison, wether we think coming sets will include more snow-support cards/payoffs and even more importantly (especially if they don't ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

As a final side note, resident tool-bag Blake Rasmussen doesn't think fetchlands are necessary because you only need 1 for commander and most players don't need to optimize decks. Wow, this interview is nuts. Around the 12min mark where The Prof asks if maybe the reason the fetches cost ...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Astrolabe enables a lot of things but I do not think it warrants a ban at this point. Right now, the requirement that you must run Snow lands is not a drawback. WotC could easily print Snow hate in MH2. For example, a 1 or 2 cmc instant spell which destroys target snow permanent would be perfect. Th...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Was forced to stop playtesting with friends, because of covid, but I still like and enjoy modern. Re: State of Legacy Thread

Breach was definitely underrepresented in paper compared to MTGO. I think the cost of LED and the threat of a ban kept the numbers low in paper. If they hadn't banned it I think that would have changed as the win rate would eventually attract more players.

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Dream Trawler is power creep incarnate. I was thinking back to 2012-2013 when Sphinx's Revelation was considered good and comparing how insane Dream Trawler is in comparison. It's like a Spinx's Rev that also presents a 2-3 turn clock with hexproof... insane. This is silly... Aetherling (which is t...

I ran quite a few drafts in arena this past week and got absolutely crushed by dream trawler . That's not satisfying, especially when there are real dollars on the line.. Same. I haven't played with any new cards since M20 until this past week drafting Theros on Arena (also first time playing digit...

MH2 will happen, but who buys it is the question? It would be easy to rename it eternal horizons if Modern is dead.. .. I'm definitely going to buy it! I loved the MH limited environment. All of the fun throwback cards and the number of powerful new cards higher than you'd ever seen in a standard s...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

There's a lot of good comments here, too many to quote. I, like many of you, have no interest in playing digital Magic. I've never been a fan of video games (for a number of reasons) and Magic gives me an experience that I can't get with other games. I think the comparison to vinyl/mp3 music is apt....

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

Oh, one other idea... I know they've been controversial, but it may be worth discussing Secret lairs in the context of being a reprint vehicle for certain cards the format needs. They seem to be a quick turnaround time, with few restrictions on what can be reprinted, while also being relatively con...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 01/13/2020)

A color-shifted "white" Sinkhole would be cool.

Ww Exile target non-basic land, sorcery speed.

I think Wasteland would be too strong for Modern (I say that as someone who loves playing Wasteland). On the other hand, I could see Rishadan Port being a fair addition to the meta.
