Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

Force and CS are great, but Archmage's Charm is the new Cryptic Command , and likely one of the best cards to be playing in the format today Absolutely true. I never feel bad seeing a charm in my hand, and run 4 in any list (UB or esper control). Not sure about it being undervalued or underplayed t...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/13/2020)

I think Saga is underappreciated for control decks actually. It will close out the game fairly quickly, and on a different angle than the 'traditional' PW package. Saga is also disgusting with big Teferi. You can get a third golem out of each saga that way, or can effectively reduce the cost of the ...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

I've been away from modern for a while (release of Eldraine). The ban of Oko and Opal got me back, and I've been tinkering with various lists. I've recently been playing this Esper list, which feels pretty good. It's still very much a work in progress, but I like how it plays so far, and it almost a...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Oh wow. That's quite the move by WotC. Definitely the right move, but I hadn't expected them to do it.

Looking forward to see where modern will go from here!

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

Aye, I'm not planning to change my lists much if Hogaak eats a ban. I didn't run a whole lot of GY hate to begin with, relying more on incidental GY hate (Kaya, Kaya's Guile) and exile effects to keep Hogaak in check. It wasn't perfect, but I feel control decks are too slow to handle the really fast...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

The big danger about this is market instability, which can concretely affect a lot of players, but there's probably a way to limit that risk with careful wording. This is aso very true, but I think they can't really win here. If they don't take action, people will feel Hogaak is 'safe', bumping pri...

Re: [Official] Modern Prices Discussion

Then again, it's hard for me to justify playing anything other than Hogaak since it's busted and (LMFAO) Wizards banned the right card, lol. ;) Enjoy it while you can  ! I'm probably gonna bite the bullet and get my set of seasoned pyromancer soon, I can't see them dropping much and I just wa...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I'm all in favour of being very cautious with bans, and making sure they have the data to support any action they take, but I also feel WotC has to either share more information, or act more quickly in this day and age, as that is just more and more an expectation from players based on their experie...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

I think it would be a bit of a stretch for even the most fanatical Modern optimists to look at the T8 alone, ignore everything else at this event (assuming Day 2 and beyond repeats the Day 1 performance), and claim Modern is totally healthy. It will be much more interesting if Hogaak completely cra...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

I like the look of the mentor decks. Why no unearth though? Unearth, Mentor and Snap do disgusting things together. Is it just too much at that point? I'm currently back on a more 'traditional' control list with counters, removal and some walkers, and trying out 2 Tasigur in the main as both card ad...

Re: [Primer] Esper Draw-Go Control

There's another Esper control list of MC IV (Sergio Garcia Gonzalez), which looks like more of hybrid between control and a Mentor deck. Very interesting list, and, similar to Wafo-Tapa, as the pushes in the side. Planeswalkers 2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor 2 Narset, Parter of Veils 2 Teferi, Time Ravel...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

yeah, she's brutal against phoenix and shuts down big teferi in traditional uw control. Which is why I have two narset of my own in the sideboard. Thank goodness, got a playset when she was still a dollar a copy. Still have not given up trying to get one copy of her alternate art - will get one som...

In my current main deck list, three. But I also run snappies, so can always get them back.

Re: [Deck] Esper Draw-Go Control

With regard to lands: The mana base, as you said, hurts a lot. Fetch shocking has lost me more games I want to admit. Could you imagine a world in which the mana base becomes less hurtful by playing more basics and Prismatic Vistas? Not really. Our spells are really colour intensive, so we need lot...

Re: [Deck] Esper Draw-Go Control

That looks fun, good job! How has Chromium been for you? Seems like an over-costed win-more card at first glance, but I haven't tried it, yet. It agree it looks like a win-more card. But I've found it super helpful in control mirrors, and to quickly close out grindy games (Jund, for example), as we...

Re: [Deck] Esper Draw-Go Control

Played a bunch more games on MTGO last night, and I'm pretty happy with my current list. The one janky change I'm considering is swapping Baneslayer Angel for Blood Baron of Vizopka. I'm just a little tired of seeing path take the angel. I know Baneslayer is better, but I also like trying dumb thing...

Diversity looks pretty good right now. Jund has also come back in force between W6 and Seasoned Pyromancer.

I like modern a lot right now, and I'm still very curious to see where we all will end up in a couple of months.

Re: [Deck] Esper Draw-Go Control

What tools do you all use to deal with planeswalkers? Between War and W6, I see a lot more walkers now. I've been playing against jund a lot as well recently, and discard > W6 > Lili is very hard to deal with, and they can land early enough to go around counterspells, and discard can rip the counter...

Re: [Deck] Esper Draw-Go Control

The addditional removal, and diverse GY hate (Kaya, Kaya's Guile, Nihil Spellbomb), and the option to go into all the sweet cards black opens up for (Lilianas, discard, Kalitas, Tasigur) all make Esper great in my opinion. And above all: Esper Charm. All three modes are relevant, and awesome at the ...

Re: [Deck] Esper Draw-Go Control

Two main reasons: 1: I usually want to cast a targeted discard spell early, and will look to take an early game play. After that, I rely on my counterspells to prevent problems from landing. 2: The lifeloss from TS hurts a lot. Especially with the painful mana base we need to run. Thoughtseize is de...

Re: [Deck] Esper Draw-Go Control

I don't think discussing the sideboard in isolation is terribly helpful, other than talking about generic effects we all (probably) need in the 75 may not want in the main. Even then, this all depends on the overall strategy you're going for (e.g.: discard, all out draw-go, heavy on walkers). What I...

Re: [Official] State of Modern Thread (B&R 07/08/2019)

Wizards made the right banning, destroying the deck's OTKs, but leaving a tier 2 deck behind as with every ban they are doing of late. I agree. Bridge was the card that needed to. I do still wonder if it was enough though. On the hand, it seems like modern is in a pretty good spot now: lots of diff...

Re: [Official] Modern Prices Discussion

MH1 is still very interesting. Box EV is quite a bit above the cost of a box, and all cards that are seeing any sort of play are going up (sometimes quite a bit, like Wrenn and Six and Hexdrinker). I'm still trying to decide if it's worth getting another box, and if so if it's better to crack it or ...

Re: [Deck] Esper Draw-Go Control

I really like discard spells, and I've been thinking about running a number of them recently. They always feel really good in games after the bridge ban. Howeber, I always end up cutting most (if not all) from my control lists. Reason being I don't like the tension they create in the game plan in th...

Re: [Official] Modern Prices Discussion

Agreed. I think a straight to modern set was a mistake. While it allows WotC to print cards with a more appropriate power level for modern, or with mechanics they don't want to print into standard, it makes modern even more expensive to get into. MH prices will only shoot up when the supply starts t...
