This set is going to be a shining draft format, and a good tithe of commander cards as well. Overall, win for me.

Garth is baller but he's not sweeping the postseason, like Dominique he's a human highlight reel. Grist is definitely Chris Webber. Aeve is the Alex English Nuggets.

Sorry everyone, I only skimmed the thread but I want to offer some thoughts for creative. Spiders - Make them the primary green species. They are integral to this worlds lore in multiple ways, they offer the most interesting design space and creative direction. Elves would just be other humans in th...

Re: [Custom Rules] What would be the implications of abolishing Type-specific subtypes?

Other people might have different takes. I'm just me. : ) No, I understand and i am very grateful for your responses as they gave me different angles to approach this concept. I think Tribal was a good idea with a clumsy execution and I believe subtypes are very underutilized when it comes to nonpe...

Re: Warhammer 40K, Lord of the Rings, and other IPs in Magic.

I guess as long as the art feels consistent with Magic I am fine. But I would not love art that is too cartoony or too realistic. Unfortunately I suspect that the art will closely match the franchises it's advertising, so for anything live action I'd bet that we'll have more of this photo-realism o...

Re: [Custom Rules] What would be the implications of abolishing Type-specific subtypes?

For what it's worth I think those constraints I wrote in bullet points are good constraints. They're a strength of the type system and they are a net positive for card design and gameplay. I would not try to get around them at all. I think you could use flavorful creature types for permanents (Plan...

Re: [Custom Rules] What would be the implications of abolishing Type-specific subtypes?

The rules obstacle is that most non-creature subtypes have significant rules and gameplay baggage: Some subtypes have unique behaviour defined by the CR: Aura, Equipment, Fortification, Saga. If a card has one of these subtypes, it needs to behave like this subtype. Some subtypes exist so that card...

[Custom Rules] What would be the implications of abolishing Type-specific subtypes?

If "Enchantment - Goblin" or "Instant - Jace" or "Legendary Planeswalker - Elder Dragon Bolas" for example were theorized possible, what rules would they break, what rules would need clarity, and what new definitions might be required? Or any other thoughts you might ha...

Re: Warhammer 40K, Lord of the Rings, and other IPs in Magic.

@caulkwrangler I didn't say anything about MtG's business model, so I'm not sure why you're bringing that up. I think you could definitely make an argument that it's exploitative as well, but at least we all got in knowing that (even if they've continued to make it more and more exploitative as yea...

Re: Warhammer 40K, Lord of the Rings, and other IPs in Magic.

The game is massively different than it was two literal decades ago. I've been playing in "Low" powerlevel on EDHrec and a lot of the games are over before turn 10. Basically every game is over before turn 15. The game has sped up significantly in recent years. For example, I've found a g...

Re: Warhammer 40K, Lord of the Rings, and other IPs in Magic.

Exactly what am I arguing? I have no idea, you haven't said. Fan sets have essentially none of the problems of WotC doing UB. They don't pressure players to use them and are 100% opt-in, they aren't motivated by money, and since they're not being approved by the owners of the IP they're not adverti...

it could be called Game: the Playing with all terms changed to generic ones and it would be just as fun. I'm a pretty hardcore melvin/spike, and even I wouldn't go NEARLY that far. I can't imagine someone honestly thinking that all the art and character in the game is irrelevant to the enjoyment of...

Re: [Custom Rules] How would you like to see Magic expanded?

Yes! the rules syntax can already support all sorts of explorative things. with my old playgroup, we would sometimes chill out and use our casual chaos decks just to see what we could build on the board, or see if we could create a 1000/1000 creature together, or try to determine whether there were...

I'm sincerely glad that you like this, but the examples that you listed make me cringe. It's hard to express my distaste for this idea while simultaneously being fine with players liking it. As I think on this more and more, I realize that I don't have a huge problem with LotR or D&D in black b...

I am all for this Universes Beyond and their inclusion everywhere. More players, more money for retailers, and more interesting flavor. The day I can lead Mega Man, Ultra Man, and Superman into battle against a horde deck running the Death Star will be a great one.

[Custom Rules] How would you like to see Magic expanded?

This seemed the most appropriate place to pose this question, but please move it if it belongs someplace better. M:tG is a robust and fun combat game, but a lot of times I wish there was more to it than that. Ways to explore a world by moving, train yourself outside of combat, engage in commerce or ...
